The evening program
The ranger talk was about to start. In the grass beside the benches, chocolate-brown slugs had already begun theirs. Two of them are moving pictures.
Pale, spotted, unbothered
Forty-five photographs in about ninety minutes, which is still, by any honest measure, slower than a slug. Ghost-white ones on moss. Leopard ones on cedar. One doing a headstand off a log.
Slugs in gentle repose
Morning slugs on bark, noon slugs among the ferns, an evening trio of dark ones back in the grass. And at 10:40 in the morning, the trip's one and only snail, wearing the only house on the trail.
Fifty photographs
The sword fern was a runway. The fallen log was a boulevard. The breathing hole on the right side of the mantle, the pneumostome, got its own portrait session.
Headlamp slugs
Evening sightings by the tent, glossy in the lamplight, moving with the confidence of something that has never once been late.
Four farewells
A pretzel pose on a stump. Two sun-gold slugs at the trailside. One last look before the trail turned back toward the car.
Behold the slug who holds no watch,
elusive and wondrous to see,
carrying everything on her back,
including her bud snack.
What a life to lead, and a time to be,
sluggerly slugging, not ever in a hurry.
The slugs in the forest sometimes slide out for us to see.
And if the slug we do not find,
we'll see the trail they left behind.
